Nose Surgery Types and Procedures

Nose surgery or rhinoplasty is one of the most popular types of plastic surgery performed today. There are five different techniques that can be used during this type of surgery including open rhinoplasty, closed rhinoplasty, filler rhinoplasty, ethnic rhinoplasty, and revision rhinoplasty.

Open rhinoplasty, used for more extensive work on the nose, is the most commonly performed of these techniques. Using this technique, the surgeon makes incisions in the skin between the nostrils then, lifts the skin and tissue to reshape the nose.

Closed rhinoplasty is performed when people need only small changes made to their nose. The surgeon makes an incision inside the nose then, separates the skin from the bone and cartilage where they can be taken out, reshaped, or rearranged.

Filler rhinoplasty involves injecting a type of filler such as Restylane into depressions on the nose to improve its shape, but the improvements are only temporary. This technique is not really considered a surgery.

Ethnic rhinoplasty is a technique being performed on increasing numbers of African Americans, Asians, and Hispanic Americans to make small changes to their noses, whether it is to make their nose more narrow at the bottom, change the shape of the tip, or change the bridge of the nose.

People who make the best candidates for rhinoplasty are those who want to correct what they consider to be a big or wide nose or who want their nose tip reshaped. Other good candidates are those who want to correct a crooked or asymmetric nose. The number of men getting rhinoplasty has increased in the last decade. While women ultimately want a more petite looking nose, men are just looking for a nose that fits the rest of their face. Teenage girls wanting rhinoplasty must be at least fourteen years old. Teenage boys must be at least sixteen.

A lot of people end up having other procedures performed on their face so that all of their features will be in balance after the rhinoplasty. Getting a combination of surgeries done in one procedure during one visit to the operating room, versus having more than one procedure done on different occasions can save people money in the long run. All candidates should have a realistic idea of what they think the nose surgery will do for their appearance. Finding a picture of a nose they would like will give the surgeon a better idea of what they are looking for, but they must realise that the new nose will just be improved, not perfect after surgery.

The cost of a rhinoplasty procedure varies depending on how much work has to be done, but usually ranges from £4,000.00 to £9,000.00 unless a revision procedure is being performed. Revisions cost several thousand dollars more.
