Goodpasture syndrome (GS), also known as pulmonary renal syndrome, is a combined clinical entity of acute glomerulonephritis and pulmonary alveolar hemorrhage. This is an auto immune disorder and is caused by a genetic predisposition to antibodies and environmental insults like smoking, air pollution and viral infections. Common symptoms include cough, blood in the sputum and urine, breathlessness, weakness, swelling of the body, fever and high blood pressure.
The Ayurvedic treatment of GS is aimed at treating the basic pathology of the disease, correcting immune dysfunction and preventing complications. To prevent or reduce antibody deposition in the lungs, medicines like Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Pippali (Piper longum), Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka), Som (Ephedra vulgaris), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Bhruhatkantakari (Solanum indicum), Karkatshrungi (Pistichia integerima), Kushtha (Saussurea lappa), Kulingan (Alpimia galangal), Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa) and Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) are used. In order to reduce and prevent antibody deposition in the kidneys, medicines like Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Apamarga (Achyranthus aspera), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) and Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis) are used.
To treat symptoms of the lungs, medicines like Sitopaladi-Churna, Talisadi-Churna, Shwaskuthar-Ras, Gojivhadi-Qadha, Ras-Sindur and Sameer-Pannag-Ras are used. To treat symptoms involving the kidneys, medicines like Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Gomutra-Haritaki and Chandraprabha-Vati are used. To prevent or treat serious complications like bleeding either in the lungs or kidneys, medicines like Vasa, Laxa (Purified wax), Naagkeshar (Messua ferrea), Sphatik-Bhasma, Chandrakala-Ras and Kamdudha-Ras are used in high doses. In order to improve the immune status of the body so as to prevent recurrence of the disease, medicines like Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Raj-Vangeshwar-Ras, Suvarna-Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Abhrak-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma are used.
Ayurvedic treatment can thus significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality of GS. It is important to note that both severe bleeding in the lungs, and acute kidney failure, can be serious, life-threatening conditions, and require immediate hospitalization.
