Because I am a woman and I know how important hair is to the female population, I know if you are losing your hair, despair can set in really fast. The expression, "having a bad hair day", is not just a random utterance, it is a nightmare that you fear won't go away.

Hopefully those thoughts settle down and you begin asking what is the cause of hair loss in women. By asking that question you can start down the path toward understanding the underlying cause and seek treatment.

Once you discover the reason your beauty is being threatened, you can look at the ways to fight back. Before we look at the whys of hair loss, let's take a moment to look at how hair grows into the beautiful tresses in the first place.

On the average, hair grows about a half inch a month. Each strand lives anywhere from 2- 6 years then falls out, and is replaced by another strand of hair. This cycle normally continues well into our golden years.

As the body ages, so does the hair. It's not uncommon in the senior years to find your hair lose it's thickness and fullness. In a perfect world the natural cause of hair loss in women is aging.

But we all know we don't live in a perfect world. So let's look at the other reasons for the loss of hair. If you don't know the underlying reason, you won't know how to go about getting those tresses back. Read through the following cause of hair loss in women before you seek treatment:

  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Thyroid imbalances
  • Cancer and the treatment of the disease
  • Lupus
  • Syphilis
  • Menopause
  • Genetics
  • Prescription drugs
  • Tumor on the ovary
  • Tumor on the adrenal glands
  • Stressful lifestyles
  • Scalp infected with ringworm
  • Burned scalp

Some of the above reasons are temporary or will have obvious treatments. Some you may not even know you have, so it is critical that you see your medical doctor if your hair is falling out. If you discover one of the illnesses above is why your tresses are falling out, you need to get treatment for that disease.

Studies show 95% of female hair loss is due to hereditary or genetic causes. You may have heard of Female Pattern Baldness. The scientific name is Alopecia. The good news is this is treatable.

Check with your physician. If he or she gives you a clean bill of health as far as the above diseases concerned, fortunately the cause of hair loss in women for you might be genetic, as in female pattern baldness. Your hair can grow back again. It just needs a little help from a nutritional supplement.
